Takhar is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan and is one of the northern provinces of the country. The center of Takhar is the city of Taluqan. Takhar province has a common border with Badakhshan, Kunduz, Baghlan provinces and also with Tajikistan. Takhar has an area of 12,457 square kilometers and a population of 1,093,092. Takhar has 15 districts which including Baharak, Bangi, Chah Ab, Chal, Darqad, Dashti Qala, Farkhar, Hazar Sumuch, Ishkamish, Kalafgan, Khwaja Bahauddin, Khwaja Ghar, Namak Ab, Rustaq, Warsaj and Yangi Qala. Takhar residents speak in Dari language.
