Balkh is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan and is located in the north of the country. The capital of Balkh province is the city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Balkh shares borders with Jawzjan, Sarpol, Kunduz and Samangan provinces and also with Uzbekistan. Balkh has an area of 17249 square kilometers and a population of 1123948 people. Balkh has 12 urban areas and 13 districts. Charbolak, Charkint, Chimtal, Dawlatabad, Dihdadi, Kaldar, Khulm, Kishindih, Marmul, Nahri Shahi, Sholgara, Shortepa and Zari are the districts of Balkh province. All the ethnic groups of Afghanistan live in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif. The residents of Balkh province speak in Dari, Uzbek and Pashto languages.
